FAY -- THE HALLOWEEN CHICKEN:
A Halloween Fable: Sequel to A Chicken Named Fay: An Easter Story
A chicken named Fay and her rabbit friend Ray
Had been working long hours to bring Easter Day
To children: As only they could.
Their jobs were just great, and they worked hard and late
And life seemed to be very good.
But the seasonal work left a gap in their lives
That wouldn’t be filled with husbands or wives Because they were both ugly as sin!
(And both had been disowned by their kin)
Santa's elves were OK, but their mischievous ways
Made for unpredictable days
“So, what now can we do?” he said to her
“We’re just bundles of feathers and fur!”
“Now, wait just a minute”, she said…..
“If we disguise ourselves to go out and explore;
Then people won’t laugh like before”
And Ray nodded "yes" with his head.
So, costumes they made from a sheet and some straw
That were the cleverest things that you ever saw!
They wandered around for a while
And found folks giving candy and other things dandy
To children whose tricks made them smile.
A lady peeked out to look up the street
And yelled “Herman, come here…..this is so neat!”
“These kids in the costumes really are keen:
They’re the cutest darned things that I’ve ever seen!”
So, Fay and her friend looked around too
Then Ray said, “I think she means me and you”
Now, remember the angel way up in the sky?
Well, she was still watching this chick and her guy!
(Who stayed out real late and went home feeling great)
She sent them a dream: They awoke in a tizzy
And started a business that would again keep them busy
So here's what this story is really about:
How these two simple beings whose courage just never gave out
....With the help of an angel in whom they believe...
Started the custom of costumes on Halloween Eve!
